Timothy Brown and friends present an evening of music inspired by love in all of its many manifestations. The concert will feature the Liebeslieder and Neues Liebeslieder Waltzes of Johannes Brahms along with music for piano, voice and violin by Gershwin, Kreisler, Schumann and others.
The texts of these waltzes express the gamut of human emotion on the subject of Eros, from flirtation to enticement, to strong passion, to domestic harmony, to endless bliss, to various forms of disappointment/frustration, to sweet directness, to sadness at rejection, with a nod to ebullient young love. The tunes exhibit Brahms’s usual elegant, classical sophistication and lush evocativeness: you can hear the raging spring, see the little bird hopping around trying to find a home, view the cocky swain eying the ten iron bars on the pretty maiden’s front door, and etc. One critic called Brahms’s chamber music some of “the most sophisticated and exquisitely crafted of the Romantic era.” This is a recital not to be missed!!!
Pianist Timothy D. Brown performs frequently throughout the area as a soloist, accompanist, chamber musician and chorister. He has served as accompanist for VOICES Chorale, The Capital Singers of Trenton and The New Jersey Gay Men’s Chorus and can be heard on their recordings. He currently accompanies the RVCC Chorale and sings with The Madrigal Singers. Also active in musical theater, Tim has worked with many schools, universities and theater companies throughout the area as a pianist, singer and musical director. He appeared at the 1867 Sanctuary in cabarets with Jan Baldwin and with the Poquelin Players. Tim is currently the music director and organist for Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church in Glenside, PA. He maintains a private piano studio and freelances as a vocal, instrumental and dance accompanist. A native of Columbus, OH, Tim is a graduate of Capital University with a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance. He also received a Masters Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ.
Noriko Schneiderman, Pianist, is a native of Japan and studied in Tokyo and graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae. She came to the United States in 1989 and studied piano pedagogy at the New School for Music Study in Kingston, NJ. As a senior faculty member at the New School she taught both piano and piano pedagogy for five years. Noriko now teaches piano at The Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, NJ. As a soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist she has performed in Austria, France, Japan, and the United States.
Soprano Jessica Mary Murphy is honored to return to The 1867 Sanctuary at Ewing for this performance of Liebeslieder with Tim Brown and Friends, after joining the Dr. Richard Swain and the Poquelin Players for their Just Plain Silly Cabaret last November.
A true Cross-over Artist, Ms. Murphy began her performing career as a child singer/actor, starring in several productions at the Regional Tony Award Winning Children’s Theater Company in Minneapolis, MN. After gaining acceptance to the renowned musical theatre program at the University of Michigan, she performed in several main stage productions including Anything Goes (Mrs. Harcourt), A Little Night Music (Mrs. Nordstrom), and Candide (Cunegonde) opposite former Jersey Boys star Daniel Reichard in the title role. Directly after graduation, Ms. Murphy was cast as Sister Margaretta in the 2nd National Tour of the 1998 Broadway Revival Production of The Sound of Music starring “The Brady Bunch” personality Barry Williams. Ms. Murphy returned to New York City to continue pursuit of her musical theatre career, being cast in several regional productions in the Midwest and Northeast – Fiddler on the Roof (Grandma Tzeitel/ u/s Golde), The Wizard of Oz (Glinda/ Aunt Em), Titanic (Kate Murphey), Nunsense (Sister Mary Hubert), Footloose (Wendy Jo), Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Madame de la Grande Bouche/ u/s Mrs. Potts), and The Music Man (Ethel Toffelmeir/ u/s Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn), culminating with a reprisal of her role as Sister Margaretta, and as Mrs. Martini/Mrs. Bishop in a production of A Wonderful Life at the celebrated Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, NJ, choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler (Tony Award: Hamilton, In The Heights). In addition, Ms. Murphy toured with The Sound of Music in Asia, visiting mainland China and Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. Over her musical theater career, Ms. Murphy has done over 500 performances of the beloved Rogers and Hammerstein musical! Most recently, she was seen as Flick’s Mom/u/s Mrs. Schwartz at Philadelphia’s Historic Walnut Street Theatre in their production of A Christmas Story.
Her voice always “classically inclined,” Ms. Murphy returned to academia to complete her graduate work in classical voice performance at Westminster Choir College in 2010. Hailed as an “exceptional soloist,” who “demonstrates great control while singing at an incredibly soft dynamic, especially at the top of her range”, her opera roles include Frasquita (Carmen), Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare), Baby Doe (The Ballad of Baby Doe), The Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte), Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), Nella (Gianni Schicchi), Serpina (La serva padrona) and Flora (The Turn of the Screw). After hearing Ms. Murphy sing a selection of Poulenc Mélodies in the French Art Song Festival at Westminster, the legendary coach and accompanist Dalton Baldwin invited her to study with him the following summer at the Académie Internationale d’Eté de Nice in France. Upon her return, she was asked to be a soloist for Mr. Baldwin’s 80th Birthday Celebration in New York City the following winter. Ms. Murphy has performed nationally as a Solo Recitalist. She won First Place at the NJNATS Festival of Singing competition in both 2011 and 2012, and was selected as a Semi-Finalist at the Joy In Singing Positively Poulenc Competition in New York in 2013. Ms. Murphy is a Soprano with Opera Philadelphia’s Chorus under the baton of Elizabeth Braden, sings with the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Philadelphia Symphonic Choir under Dr. Joe Miller, and freelances at churches around the Philadelphia Area as a Soloist and Soprano Section Leader.
Ms. Murphy holds a MM in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ) and a BFA in Musical Theatre from The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI). She currently resides in Philadelphia with her husband, James, and Poulenc, their cat.
Mezzo soprano Alyson Harvey‘s performances have been reviewed as “theatrically meaningful“, “beautiful, compelling, and inspired” and “chillingly dramatic”. Her solo appearances include work with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra; the Berkshire Bach Society; the Spoleto Festivals of Charleston, SC, and Spoleto, Italy, working with Gian Carlo Menotti; The Mostly Mozart Festival; and the Philadelphia Orchestra under the batons of Bobby McFerrin and Stéphane Denève. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in performances of Messiah with the Masterwork Chorus of New Jersey, and her Alice Tully debut in Copland’s “In the Beginning” at the New York Philharmonic’s Copland Festival. Her current and past professional affiliations include the Carmel Bach Festival, the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir, The Philadelphia Singers, Fuma Sacra, Opera Philadelphia, Cincinnati Opera, and St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. Alyson holds degrees from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (MM and Artist Diploma in Opera) and Westminster Choir College (BM), and maintains an active private voice studio in Philadelphia, PA where she lives with her wonderful husband Rich and two kitties, Mikey and Judy.
Jonathan Moser has loved music ever since childhood when he would sit under the family piano listening as his parents and grandmother played Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. His formal musical education began as a violin student, an education he pursued through a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree from Shenandoah University and a Master of Music in Performance degree from Arizona State University, with additional Doctoral studies in performance. Mr. Moser has enjoyed working with many outstanding teachers including Katie McLin, James Stern, Sergiu Schwartz, Linda Cerone, and Ronda Cole, and he has performed in master classes with Jaime Laredo, Claude Frank, Sylvia Rosenberg, Shlomo Mintz, and Sergiu Luca.
During his studies, Mr. Moser enjoyed minoring in voice, studying viola, and discovering his love of conducting. He has now been directing music programs for many years. This fall Mr. Moser began a new position as Visiting Instructor of Music at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA. Summers he can be found working as the Orchestra Program and Adjudication Director for the Philadelphia International Music Festival and teaching at other festivals. Recent prior posts include Orchestra Director at Kutztown University and Music Director of the Wilmington Community Orchestra. Before moving to Philadelphia, he was the Director of Orchestras and Instructor of Music at Westminster College and served as adjunct faculty for Grove City College. He has also been the Director of Music at University Presbyterian Church, Providence Presbyterian Church, and Proclamation Presbyterian Church.
Singing has always been a part of Mr. Moser’s musical milieu. A member of a long line of vocalists – most notably his great-grandmother, who sang with the legendary Enrico Caruso in the Metropolitan Opera during the early 1900’s, Mr. Moser began singing as a soprano in the church choir, gradually working his way to the bass section. He minored in voice in college and then did not pursue further training until recently.
An active performer, Mr. Moser regularly concertizes with chamber ensembles, as a recitalist, and with orchestras. He is a member of the Music at Ethical: Concerts on the Square players and the Bay-Atlantic Symphony. For two years he toured extensively with Sandip Burman – an internationally renowned tabla artist. Mr. Moser was also a member of the Wheeling Symphony and the Erie Philharmonic. Mr. Moser has served as concertmaster for Pittsburgh Opera Theater, Music on the Edge, the Erie Philharmonic, and Musica Nova, among others. He has served as principal second with the Bay-Atlantic Symphony and the Wheeling Symphony. Mr. Moser was winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Solo Competition, the Philadelphia College of Bible Solo Competition (2 years), the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association Solo Competition, the Shenandoah University Concerto competition, and was a finalist in the National Symphony Orchestra’s Young Soloists Competition. Mr. Moser was a founding member of the Arizona State University’s Katherine K. Herberger Graduate String Quartet. He also enjoys other opportunities to collaborate with ensembles such as the Pittsburgh-based contemporary group and ensemble in residence at the University of Pittsburgh, IONSOUND. Mr. Moser and his wife are blessed with three children.
Dave Mosteller , Bass, is a native of Havertown, PA, and lives in Huntingdon Valley, PA. A software engineer with music degrees from Susquehanna and Temple Universities, Dave is soloist with the St. Peter’s choir in Glenside, a member of Choral Arts Philadelphia, and was for many years a member and favorite soloist with The Music Group of Philadelphia with Seán Deibler. Dave has enjoyed singing with The Philadelphia Singers, the Pennsylvania Pro-Musica, the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, and the Pennswood Chamber Chorale. He has been a guest soloist with a variety of Philadelphia area church and community choirs, and sang the role of Melchior in productions of Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors” at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Marlton, NJ
