Steve Sandberg, Piano and Premik Russell Tubbs, Sax/Flute
July 13, 2019 @ 8:00 pm
Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society welcome pianist Steve Sandberg back to the 1867 Sanctuary with sax/flute virtuoso Premik Russell Tubbs.
Three time Emmy-nominated composer/pianist Steve Sandberg (stevesandbergmusic.com and stevesandbergcomposer.com) plays original music that masterfully blends classical, world music and jazz with the excitement of virtuosic improvisation. Sandberg grew up playing classical piano, then became part of New York’s vibrant Latin music scene. His mentor in the field of jazz and Latin music was multi-instrumentalist Mario Rivera, a key member of the Dizzie Gillespie, Tito Puente, and George Coleman ensembles. Sandberg has also performed with Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, David Byrne and Bebel Gilberto.
At the 1867 Sanctuary, he will perform solo pieces from the classical piano repertoire (Ravel, Debussy, Chopin) alternating with his original “classical world jazz” compositions based on these pieces with sax/flute virtuoso Premik Russell Tubbs (who has played with John McLaughlin, Santana, and Wayne Shorter).
“A breathtaking composite of world music, jazz, and classical expressions…an exultant music…incredibly personal and precise in its direction, yet universal in its language and ability to connect.” – Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz
If you’re ever anywhere near a Steve Sandberg performance, do yourself a favor and go — he’s an astonishing musician whose work transcends genres.” – Anne Nelson.
Jazz at the 1867 Sanctuary and throughout the Trenton/Princeton area is featured on trenton.jazznearyou.com. Download their app for iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire!
