Legendary alto sax jazzman Richie Cole comes home to Ewing with his Alto Madness Orchestra for the first time! Appearing with Richie Cole (on the alto sax) and comprising the Alto Madness Orchestra will be Peter Lauffer on piano, Frank Cook on bass, Dave McGraw on drums, Rick Daza on trumpet, Dale Davoe on trombone, and Bobby Howell on tenor sax.

For this concert, General Admission tickets are $30 (with discounts for members of the New Jersey Jazz Society and Friends of the 1867 Sanctuary, and for school and college students) to cover the costs of his “mini-big band” ensemble.

A Ewing High School graduate, Richie Cole currently resides in the Pittsburgh area. His professional career has been highly regarded, beginning with a full scholarship from Downbeat Magazine to the Berklee School of Music upon graduation from Ewing. At age 21, he joined the Buddy Rich Big Band. He later played in Doc Severinsen’s and Lionel Hampton’s big bands. Eventually, he formed his own band and became a world-wide sensation, helping to popularize bebop and his own “alto madness” style.

Cole has performed and recorded with many jazz and vocal greats, including the Manhattan Transfer, Freddie Hubbard, Art Pepper, Tom Waits, Nancy Wilson and others. He has played Carnegie Hall, the Village Vanguard, and a command performance for the Queen of England.

Richie Cole is known for the sweet sounds of his alto saxophone, and creative arrangements for his Alto Madness Orchestra.

Cole is grateful for his early music education, proud of his local roots, and enjoys sharing his love of music with up-and-coming young artists. He has a personal connection to the 1867
Sanctuary, and is pleased to support its growth as an arts center. This will be the fourth time Cole has performed at the Sanctuary since its opening as an arts center in 2016, but the first time Cole has brought with him his seven-piece, big-band sound Alto Madness Orchestra.
