Classical Flute and Guitar with Thomas Meany and Michael Simmons

Preservation New Jersey welcomes the Meany/Simmons Flute and Classical Guitar Duo back to the wonderful acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary. They will perform a great program of works by W. A. Mozart, Bela Bartok, Jacques Ibert, Jindrich Feld, Emilio Pujol and Astor Piazzolla.
Tom Meany, flute and Michael Simmons, classical guitar have performed throughout the Philadelphia area since their formation in 1990. Recent performances include recitals at the Brown Bag Concert Series for the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square, the Music at Saint Anne’s Concert Series, the Lansdowne Folk Club, Buck County Performing Arts Center, the Commonwealth Plaza at the Kimmel Center, Sussex County Community College, the Trinity Center for Urban Life, The Arts at St. John’s, the Chalfonte Hotel in Cape May, and for 2nd Sundays at the Mt. Laurel Library as well as being guest on WRTI’s Crossover program and featured in an article for Philadelphia Music Makers Magazine. The duo has also been on the roster of the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (PennPAT) and is heard regularly on WXPN Radio for the University of Pennsylvania.
Thomas Meany is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts, where he studied with Adeline Tomasone and Loren Lind, later studying with Harold Bennett in New York City. Tom recently completed his Masters of Music at Rowan University. He has performed at the Aspen Music Festival, Summertrio Chamber Music Festival and the Puccini Opera Orchestra in Italy. Thomas has played master classes with leading flautist such as the late Murray Panitz, Chicago Symphony’s Donald Peck, Samuel Baron at New York University and Toshio Takahashi at the East Tennessee Suzuki Flute Institute. Mr. Meany has performed in recital for the Matinee Music Club, the Philadelphia Cultural Council, the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia, the Department of Recreation, Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (PennPAT) and the Brown Bag Concert Series at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square. He performs regularly with the Meany/Simmons Flute and Classical Guitar Duo, the Philadelphia Flute Quartet and Opera Philadelphia. Mr. Meany is a Certified Suzuki Instructor and has recently received three consecutive scholarships from the Suzuki Association of the Americas. He teaches for the Saint Basil Academy, the Settlement Music School and the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. He is a past President and Vice-President of the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia. Tom has recently been named a Teaching Artist with Project 440. He plays a Brannen-Cooper Flute.
Dr. Michael Simmons is a Kodály certified music specialist and serves as the Upper School Music Director at the Woodlynde School where he directs rock and performance ensemble and teaches courses in music technology, theory, and songwriting. In addition, Dr. Simmons teaches guitar and music history at Montgomery County Community College where he was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to serve as project scholar for a series of lectures and films on American popular music. He remains active as a freelance guitarist and is Assistant Director for the Kennett Symphony Childrens Chorus. Dr. Simmons received his B.M. in guitar performance from the University of the Arts, his M.M. in guitar performance and music history from Temple University, and earned his D.M.A in music education from Boston University.

Tickets may also be purchased at the door as space allows. (Sorry – we don’t mail tickets. Tickets will be held at the box office and a receipt will be emailed if purchased online.)
**GROUP RATES (10 or more people). Group rates apply only to advance online sales and must be purchased in quantities of 10 or more within a single purchase. Group rate tickets cannot be purchased at the box office prior to the concert.
