Amber Russell and Landon Herock, Acoustic Guitars
July 11, 2018 @ 8:00 pm
Portland, Oregon-based Fingerstyle guitarist Amber Russell has had a diverse platform of musical outlets during her almost 20 years of composing music. In her home town of Elkhart Indiana, she spent 3 years learning compositions on piano,at age 13 she picked up the guitar after regularly watching her older brother Joe play bass in his band for so many years. For the next 6 years she was an active Singer songwriter in her band Geronimo with percussionist Danielle Husky. David Guevara took over as Geronimo’s percussionist in 2011. Performing and composing songs with her guitar, harmonica, and ukulele In the summer of 2012 she relocated to Los Angeles. Then she continued her journey as a singer songwriter with her band Seropolar, with her bandmate Steve Avila for the next 3 years. They practiced and performed in Marina Del Rey/ Venice Beach area regularly. Amber worked part time hosting an artist show case and open mic in Silverlake, during this time she found an interest in Fingerstyle guitar. Her solo acoustic music didn’t take off until she relocated to Portland, Oregon. A city calm and collect, enough to find the appropriate audience for her unique and eclectic sound. She currently resides in Portland.
Self-taught musician and singer-songwriter Landon Herock began playing the guitar at 13 by watching YouTube videos of fingerstyle guitarists, namely Andy Mckee and Antoine Dufour. A few years later, Landon was competing in local competitions around his Midwestern hometown of Canfield, Ohio, winning multiple Young Talent titles with both original compositions and covers of other acclaimed artists. As a Junior in high school, he attended the UArts Pre-college Summer Jazz Camp in Philadelphia, where he was featured as a soloist for his fingerstyle abilities. After graduating high school, he attended Andy Mckee’s first ever, week-long Musicarium where he was able to learn from and play with his idols – Andy McKee, Stephen Bennett, Antoine Dufour and Billy McLaughlin.
Landon has gone on to study both classical and jazz guitar; beginning with classical guitar at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, and currently at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, where he is pursuing a Jazz Guitar Performance degree. Landon has had the privilege to take lessons from Grammy nominated artist, Ben O’Neill, who has worked with some of the best known names in R&B and Hip-Hop including John Legend, Kanye West, and Christina Aguilera. Landon is currently a part of the UArts Motown Ensemble and has been in various Trio and Duo groups directed by Jazz musicians such as Matt Davis and Randy Kapralick. Landon continues to perform, write, and record music in the city of Philadelphia while attending classes. You can find him playing at Chris’s Jazz Café, Philly’s annual Midtown Fall Festival, and Time Whiskey Bar and Taproom.
