The Jazz Thieves
August 25 @ 8:00 pm
Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society are pleased to welcome The Jazz Thieves back to the 1867 Sanctuary!
The Jazz Thieves (www.jazzthieves.com) are happy to play their second show this summer at the 1867 Sanctuary. They look forward bringing their soulful solos, get-out-of-your seat dancing rhythm, and sing-a-long catchy songs to Central NJ! Come spend a summer Saturday evening with them as the sun sets!
Through evocative lyrics, soulful improvisation, and wide-ranging originals, The Jazz Thieves revitalize jazz by reconnecting it to its roots. They “steal” Duke Ellington’s melodicism, Tom Waits’s grit, Bill Withers’s soulful lyricism, and Kamasi Washington’s modern edge, uniting all it with a jazz imagination.
In late 2016, they released their first full length album, Brooklyn Elegy. Recorded and mixed at Room 17 Studios in Bushwick by engineers Joe Rogers and the Grammy Award-winner Ted Young, Brooklyn Elegy was met with critical acclaim from AllAboutJazz.com and Jazziz magazine, in addition to radio interviews and international radio airplay. What they’re saying about The Jazz Thieves:
“…spins stories of life and love on the streets of the Big Apple…with great bluesy feeling, adding a layer of sawdust to the barroom floor” – Jazziz Magazine
“Big cats, easy tigers. Nice to hear some new lions, roarsome! Stealin’s healin’…” – Fiona Ord-Shrimpton, AllAboutJazz.com ⭐⭐⭐⭐ .
“In any case, this tight little band draws on rock, pop, gospel and blues for a series of performances with a distinct contemporary New York edge….This short, solid album could have what it takes for a breakthrough…” – Doug Ramsey, Rifftides
Outside of playing together, the individual members of the Jazz Thieves have played and collaborated with jazz masters such as James Moody, Vincent Herring, David “Happy” Williams, John McNeil, and John Stetch to name a few.
Jazz at the 1867 Sanctuary and throughout the Trenton/Princeton area is featured on trenton.jazznearyou.com. Download their app for iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire!
