Steve Sandberg and Rob Thomas
March 18 @ 7:30 pm
Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society are pleased to welcome pianist Steve Sandberg and violinist Rob Thomas for an evening of world music, jazz, and classical expressions for piano and violin in the wonderful acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary.
Steve Sandberg (www.stevesandbergmusic.com) is an eclectic musician with a lifetime of experience in many worlds of music. He began studying classical piano at age 4; has toured with David Byrne, Ruben Blades, Mario Rivera and Bebel Gilberto; and was nominated for three Emmys for his original music for “Dora the Explorer” and “Go, Diego, Go”.
At this concert, Mr. Sandberg, along with virtuoso classical/jazz violinist Rob Thomas, will continue his realization of his lifelong dream to create original compositions that draw on his extensive experience with world and classical music. He will perform piano music of Ravel, Bartok, Lizst and Chopin, along with original world music compositions based on these composers.
Dan Bilawsky, on All About Jazz, writes: Mr. Sandberg’s music “is a breathtaking composite of world music, jazz, and classical expressions. In these eight tracks, he delivers unto us an exultant music that’s incredibly personal and precise in its direction, yet universal in its language and ability to connect.”
Mr. Sandberg’s classical mentor, Seymour Bernstein (featured in the Netflix documentary, Seymour: An Introduction) writes: There is a rising meteor in the musical firmament, a man of the sort of talent we can only associate with greatness. His name is Steve Sandberg. I, personally, become awestruck when listening to Steve Sandberg. His keyboard artistry and creative gifts are treasures awaiting the world’s recognition.
Rob Thomas (www.robthomasviolin.com) is widely considered to be one of the most original, technically adept and powerful violinists playing jazz and contemporary music. JazzTimes calls him a violinist of exceptional creative resources … riveting as a solo voice with a rich complex tone.
