Preservation New Jersey is pleased to present Stanley Alexandrowicz in a program of solo classical guitar in the beautiful acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary. Dr. Alexandrowicz is a specialist and scholar in the area of 19th Century Romantic guitar music (the Contemporary Period also). His repertoire dates from the time frame of the “1867” pertaining to the Sanctuary. He will present contemporary classical guitar works on the second portion of the recital that will provide audience-pleasing balance and contrast.
His recital will be devoted to 19th Century Romantic Virtuoso Guitar Composers – Luigi Legnani, Napoleon Coste, Johann Dubez, and to Contemporary American Masters – Ernst Bacon, Brian Fennelly, Kendall Kennison, and Maestro Robert W. Butts. Kendall Kennison and Robert Butts will be in attendance to introduce and speak about their compositions (Sonata No. 1 for Solo Guitar and Early Morning Suite respectively).
Classical Guitarist Stanley Alexandrowicz is internationally renowned for his thrilling virtuosity, poetic interpretations, and refined musicality. In addition to his command of the instrument’s standard repertoire, he has premiered and commissioned over 100 works by composers from Europe, Asia, the United States, Cuba, and Latin America.
Stanley Alexandrowicz often features the virtuoso Romantic guitar repertoire in his concert programs – both in conjunction with the “music of our time” and, in recitals devoted to the Romantic Art. A scholar and specialist in the field of 19th Century music (also Contemporary music), he has spent over two decades pursuing in-depth research, analysis, and performance of this oeuvre.
Although compositions of the 19th Century have long been the mainstay of the piano, voice, and violin repertoires, they have often been neglected in the programs of contemporary guitarists. Striving to correct both long-standing misconceptions and historical inaccuracies about this repertoire, Dr. Alexandrowicz has delved deeply into research concerning the music, instruments, players, performance practices, and aesthetics of the great late-Romantic guitarists.
Beginning (as a teenager) with an early admiration and respect for the “Golden-age” pianists (Josef Hofmann, Leopold Godowsky, etc.) and the profoundly insightful, virtuosic, and poetic interpretations they almost “magically” (and routinely) produced, he began his research activities into the musical world of their time. After probing hundreds of the pianists’ pedagogical tomes, articles, interviews, and historical recordings, he sought analogues within the world of the 19th Century guitar.
Such were found in the composers Napoleon Coste, J.K. Mertz, Ivan Padovec, Luigi Legnani, Johann Dubez, and others. These virtuoso guitarists were the contemporaries and colleagues of Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Paganinni, and the other mainstays of the Romantic period. Some performed with the better known composers (Legnani in duo recitals with Paganinni), while others, Mertz for example, drew upon the mainstay composers’ formal innovations, harmonic discoveries, and even directly through arrangement and transcription, to expand the guitar’s compositional, sonic, and aesthetic vocabulary. (Mertz for example, transcribed Schubert’s songs [much in the same manner as Franz Liszt had done for the piano], and Padovec arranged popular operatic selections [also as Franz Liszt had done] in the manner of “paraphrases or fantasies” upon the original operatic works. These to give but a few of the myriad of developments happening at the time.)
Stanley Alexandrowicz regularly presents the fruits of this unrelenting research into the vast riches of the 19th Century Romantic guitar repertoire through his numerous solo, chamber, and lieder recitals in this genre.A scholar and specialist in the field of 19th Century music, he often features unknown compositions by the Romantic guitar composer-virtuosi, playing on period instruments and revitalizing works which have lain dormant (often in manuscript form) for over a century. He has given lecture-recitals internationally on both Romantic and Contemporary music, including the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton – USA), and, the International Guitar Research Centre (University of Surrey – UK).
In addition to his work as an international soloist, he collaborates regularly in chamber music performances with some of the world’s leading musicians ― including internationally renowned soprano Dominika Zamara ― bringing together the worlds of opera, lieder, song, and contemporary music in realizations of unmatched sonic beauty and deep musical intelligence. Their duo debut CD, Ivan Padovec: Music for Guitar and Soprano was issued on SHEVA Collection Recordings Italy (www.shevacollection.it), summer 2015.
Performance highlights during recent concert seasons include London, New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Venice, Boston, Baltimore, and Princeton, and include the U.S. premiere of Vácav Kučera’s Concierto Imaginativo-Homenaje a Salvador Dali for guitar and string orchestra (Baltimore) in honor of the composer’s 80th birthday year.
Dr. Alexandrowicz is currently Artistic Director of the New York Classical Music Society (NYCMS), and Artist-Professor at the Alion Baltic International Music Festival & Academy. He has served as Professor of Guitar at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), Director of the Bronx House Music School (New York), and has been on the faculty of Mercy College, New York (where he additionally taught music history, theory, form and analysis, and ear-training skills). A world-renowned pedagogue and “master teacher” he is an expert on guitar ergonomics (guitarergonomics.com).

GROUP RATES are available. Choose the Group ticket option and each ticket will have a $5 discount from the General Admission price (same as the Friends of the 1867 Sanctuary ticket price)! Group rate tickets must be purchased in quantities of 10 or more within a single purchase. Group rates apply only to advance online sales and cannot be purchased at the box office prior to the concert. Groups must present themselves at the box office at the same time. For group orders of fewer than 10 people, the full General Admission rate (less the amount prepaid) may be required at the box office at the time of admission. Group rates do not apply to Student prices.
