Shane Barker, Viola, and Ekaterina Popova, Piano: “Schumann’s Musical Circle”
February 29 @ 2:00 pm
Preservation New Jersey welcomes violist Shane Barker back to the beautiful acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary with pianist Ekaterina Popova for their program, Schumann’s Musical Circle: Music for Viola and Piano by Robert and Clara Schumann, Brahms and Joachim.
The program explores the extraordinary lives of four musical giants. Late romantic repertoire influenced by nature, poetry, literature, love and friendships:
Brahms: Sonata in G Major
Clara Schumann: Romances
Joachim: Hebrew Melodies
Shane Barker, violist, enjoys a varied career as recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. He has performed across most of the eastern United States, Canada, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Iceland in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Philharmonie in Paris, and Place des Arts in Montreal. Shane enjoys long term partnerships with pianists Barbara Browne, Rob Keiser and Ekaterina Popova, flutist Pamela Taylor, harpsichordist Lewis Baratz, and oboist Kevin Chavez. He has been a founding member of the Philadelphia Harp Trio and Phoenix Chamber Players. In an effort to expand the viola repertoire, Shane has premiered works by Andrea Clearfield, Jeremy Gill, Andrew Litts and Julia Alford Fowler among others. Passionate about outreach, he has curated residencies at Veteran Centers, retirement facilities, the Third Street Alliance for Women and Children and the Nurture Nature Center. Shane holds degrees from Temple University and North Carolina School of the Arts where he studied with Sheila Browne, Karen Ritscher, Helen Kwalwasser and Evelyn Jacobs-Luise. He plays a viola by Sergio Peresson.
