Nate Phillips Quartet
August 4, 2017 @ 8:00 pm
Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society are pleased to welcome the Nate Philips Quartet to the 1867 Sanctuary Arts and Culture Center for a concert of jazz standards, particularly some favorite jazz vocal tunes, side by side with original songs written for guitar and voice.
Nate Philips has been playing piano since age 7. He is now 23, just having graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, NY, where he studied jazz performance on piano. His teachers include Mike Longo, Tom Lawton, Scott Gurney, Alan Turry, and Ed Ferdinand. The guitar has also intrigued him for 10 odd years now. Taking lessons for only a year and a half, he is mostly self-taught. Nate went to George School for high school in Newtown, PA. Towards the end of high school he started writing original songs on guitar. He has written upwards of fifty original songs since then for guitar and vocals. His influences include Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, Johnny Flynn, Fionn Regan, Elvis Perkins, and Radiohead. He also has explored painting, poetry, and creative writing. He grew up in Morrisville, PA where he still lives today.
