Nate Philips, Jazz Piano
February 6, 2019 @ 7:30 pm
Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society welcome Nate Philips back to the 1867 Sanctuary for an evening of jazz for solo piano.
For this performance Nate is going to focus on complete, unhindered, free improvisation. “I started experimenting with free improvisation after seeing Keith Jarrett in concert in 2014. Since then I have experimented heavily with my own brand of improvisation. Allow me to clarify, this means I sit down at the piano with nothing in my mind: no pre-conceived ideas. I do not now where the music will go. I have no ideas about form, chord progression, or melody. It’s like painting abstractly on a blank-canvas. I could take it anywhere I desire. For this performance, I will be taking the audience on an improvisational journey in real time. I am so thrilled to have you join me for this experience.”
Nate Philips is a 24 year-old musician from Morrisville, PA who is on a quest for authenticity in sound and in artistic vision. He has been playing piano since age 7 and guitar since age 12. From 2013 to 2017, he went to Sarah Lawrence College where he studied with some great teachers including drummer Matt Wilson, pianist Mike Longo, and the incredible guitarist Glenn Alexander. Currently, he works as an English teacher part-time for the YWCA in Trenton, however, there is still plenty of time left over for music.
His original songs–on both guitar and piano–are unique and captivating, with an intimacy that the listener can connect with immediately. His approach to jazz piano is also unique, seeing as his influences come together from across a wide spectrum of musical influences (and life influences!) to converge into something remarkable. In his spare time there is always music playing, and these days it could range from something Electronic or EDM-based, to “Chillhop” or “Lo-Fi Hip-Hop” background music, to soundtrack music from videogames, rock, folk, indie, jazz, or a range of other sounds! He also loves to write in his journal (he’s actually addicted to that), hang out at coffee shops (that can be addicting to), and in general have a really relaxed, enjoyable time in this crazy journey called life.
“Music always turns into music. As soon as I play a key, push a key down, there’s no theory any more. When I go and I hear a sound on the keyboard, all theories go out the window.”
