Let’s Duet: Bridgette and Scott Johnson in Concert

Preservation New Jersey welcomes husband and wife duo Scott and Bridgette Johnson for an afternoon of Broadway and Opera showstoppers in the beautiful 1867 Sanctuary!
After meeting in the mountains of Central City, Colorado, these two award-winning singers have enjoyed national and international careers and now bring their love of the stage (and each other!) to the 1867 Sanctuary. Joined by pianist Mun-tzung Wong, they will present favorite songs and duets from some of the stage’s most popular shows, including Phantom of the Opera, The Elixir of Love, West Side Story, Showboat, Carousel, and The Magic Flute. Join them for an afternoon of laughs, love, and beautiful music!
Praised for his “handsome baritone” and “the clarity and nobility of both his sound and his interpretive choices,” Scott Johnson, Baritone, is an active performer in the stage, concert, and sacred arenas. A recipient of the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshanna foundation, he holds voice performance degrees from the University of Southern California (BM) and the University of Wisconsin – Madison (MM).
Recent highlights include appearances with Opera Philadelphia in their production of Cold Mountain, Florentine Opera for both La bohème and L’italiana in Algeri, and Nashville Opera for La Fanciulla del West. In 2012 he was the recipient of two scholarships from The Opera Foundation to perform with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Teatro Regio di Torino, where he performed multiple roles, including an appearance with the Staatsballett Berlin as the baritone soloist in Peer Gynt. He has also been a frequent performer with Central City Opera, appearing as Mr. Lindquist in A Little Night Music, Diesel in West Side Story, Jupiter in Orpheus in the Underworld, and Prince Yamadori in Madama Butterfly. In concert, he has appeared with the Milwaukee Symphony for Handel’s Messiah and in a solo recital for Florentine Opera. He is a 3rd prize winner for the Fritz and Levinia Jensen Foundation Competition, and was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Praised by the Washington Post for her “gorgeous singing,” soprano Bridgette Gan is quickly establishing herself as a vibrant interpreter in the musical realms of opera, concert and crossover works. Recently, Ms. Gan made an acclaimed last minute debut for an indisposed Erin Morley as Marie in Palm Beach Opera’s production of La fille du régiment in which she successfully sang the company’s Matinee Youth Performance followed by the Mainstage performance within the same day. Critics called her portrayal “a tour de-force…vocally beautiful and consistent with a rich tone and sparkling high notes… a great star turn for a young singer who has a world of potential in front of her.”
Ms. Gan’s 2016/2017 season included her role debut of Norina in Don Pasquale with Opera Orlando, as well as her company and role debut with St. Petersburg Opera as Adina in L’elisir d’amore. In concert she returned to the South Florida Symphony, and was featured at the Newport Music Festival during the summer of 2016. Recent and upcoming engagements include a return to the South Florida Symphony, Opera Orlando as both Musetta in La Bohème and as a guest soloist at their 2018 Gala, and a debut with the acclaimed Pacific Symphony in Costa Mesa, California as Papagena in The Magic Flute.
In the 2015/2016 season, Ms. Gan made a strong debut with Opera Orlando in their modern production of The Impresario as the “vocally and comically sparking” Bethany Squills. She also returned to Palm Beach Opera for her role debut as Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, and made her mainstage debut with the world renowned Santa Fe Opera, creating the role of Lila in the world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain, a live recording of which was released by Pentatone and was recently nominated for a Grammy. In concert she appeared twice with the Toledo Symphony in Ohio for their “Rodgers and Hammerstein Celebration” concert tour, the South Florida Symphony for their “And the Tony Goes to” concert tour, and appeared as a guest artist for Palm Beach Opera’s Opera on the Waterfront concert. Previous seasons include her debut with the Center for Contemporary Opera in NYC as Jackie Kennedy in a reading of Chandler Carter’s new opera Bobby, and the soprano soloist in Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra in Washington, DC.
Ms. Gan was a resident artist with Palm Beach Opera from 2013-2015, where she covered Musetta in La bohème, Yadwiga in the world premiere of Enemies, A Love Story, sang Stella in Les contes d’Hoffmann, and sang Morgana in Palm Beach Opera’s “Opera in One Hour” production of Alcina. Ms. Gan is also an alumna of numerous apprentice programs, including the programs at Santa Fe Opera, Central City Opera, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis, with assignments that included Frasquita in Carmen, the cover of Madame Herz and The Cook in The Impresario/Le Rossignol, the cover of Sandrina in La finta giardiniera, Venus and Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld, Madeline/Isabel in The Face on the Barroom Floor, and Celie in Signor Deluso.
Bridgette has also distinguished herself in numerous prestigious vocal competitions throughout the country. She has won prizes from the Gerda Lissner Foundation, Central City Opera, the Licia Albanese-Pucinni Competion, Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition, Opera Index Vocal Competition, Violetta DuPont Vocal Competition, the Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M. Greenfield Competition, the National Opera Association Voice Competition and was a Grant nominee for the 2015 and 2016 Sara Tucker Award. Ms. Gan completed her Masters in Opera Performance from the Maryland Opera Studio and her Bachelors in Music from Westminster Choir College. Making her start in music theatre, she has played leading roles in countless professional venues across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and beyond including Luisa in The Fantasticks (Mount Gretna Playhouse) Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Rapunzel in Into the Woods and Lily in The Secret Garden (The Whitaker Center) Julie Jordan in Carousel (Ash Lawn/Charlottesville Opera) among many others. Bridgette was an arts week major prize winner for The National Foundation of Advancement in the Arts (NFAA.)
Bridgette is also an accomplished Fitness Instructor, holding certifications in Zumba and STRONG by Zumba and maintains an active following, particularly at PEAC Fitness in Ewing, NJ.
Hong Kong native Mun-Tzung Wong, the founder and director of New York Conducting Institute, is on staff at the Manhattan School of Music. A collaborative and solo pianist in New York City, she has appeared on WQXR and performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Alice Tully Hall, Steinway Hall and Lincoln Center. She has worked with maestros Kurt Masur, Philippe Entremont and George Manahan. She has been engaged with organizations including International Vocal Arts Institute, St. Petersburg Opera Company, New Rochelle Opera, Regina Opera, Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, Macau Youth Symphony, and Orchestra dell’Opera di Parma. Mun-Tzung was involved with Missouri Symphony Orchestra last summer, and will be back again this summer.
As a teaching artist, Ms. Wong maintains a private instrumental and vocal coaching studio in New York City. She studied conducting with maestros including Larry Rachleff, Don Schleicher, Kirk Trevor and Paul Nadler. Recognized for her sense of style and musicality, as a mezzo-soprano, she has recently appeared as a concert soloist at performances of Mozart Requiem, Mass in C minor, Vivaldi Gloria, Bach Magnificat, and Duruflé Requiem, Bach St John Passion, Handel Messiah. This May, she made her role debut as Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte.
