Le Meslange des Plaisirs

December 17 @ 7:30 pm

Kathleen Scheide

Preservation New Jersey is pleased to present the classical trio, Le Meslange des Plaisirs in a program of classic piano trios on historic instruments, with noels and seasonal music, in the beautiful listening room acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary! The trio includes James Day, violin, Carolyn Ellman, cello, and Kathleen Scheide, fortepiano. The program will include works by J.C.F. Bach, Balbastre, Corrette, Haydn and Schubert.

Le Meslange des Plaisirs (kathleenscheide.com/meslange.html) is a consortium of musicians specializing in late 18th c. chamber music and salon music 1750-1810, with diversions into earlier music and new music for historic instruments. The ensemble name translates as “A Compendium of Delights,” and was used by 18th-century theorists to describe a blending of national styles.

James Day holds degrees from Dartmouth College and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He also studied harpsichord with Anthony Newman and Peter Wolf. He has played principal viola with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Teatro San Carlo, Naples.

Carolyn Ellman, a native of Los Angeles, studied with Leslie Parnas at Boston University. She plays in the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and teaches at Settlement Music School, Philadelphia, and the Wilmington Music School.

Kathleen Scheide has concertized on harpsichord, early keyboard instruments and organ throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Russia and the Far East. She teaches at Westminster Choir College and Rowan College at Burlington, and is Organist at Church of the Loving Shepherd, West Chester, Pennsylvania. Dr. Scheide earned degrees in early music and organ performance at New England Conservatory (with honors) and the University of Southern California (organ department prize). She is also a published composer with a significant discography.
