La Fiocco: “Stravaganza in Eco: A 17th-Century Festival from Venice & Saxony”

October 26 @ 7:30 pm

Preservation New Jersey welcomes La Fiocco in their first performance in the 1867 Sanctuary. Their program, Stravaganza in Eco: A 17th-Century Festival from Venice & Saxony is the first of three concerts at the 1867 Sanctuary in their 2019-2020 concert season (lafiocco.org).

For this concert, La Fiocco will join with the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble and with the Madrigal Singers of Bucks County Community College. This program is a unique opportunity to hear the glorious music of the Venetian polychoral tradition of Giovanni Gabrieli, Michael Praetorius, and other contemporaries in Italy and Saxony of the early 17th-century Venetian school, renowned for its polychoral “echo” style.

This is a rare opportunity to hear early baroque brass with strings and an outstanding college choir, played on an impressive array of musical instruments of the early 17th century.

Artistic director Lewis R. Baratz is currently on the faculty of Lafayette College, where he conducts the Chamber Orchestra and teaches harpsichord and recorder. Baratz remarks: “This year’s season will be focused on the music of the 17th century, a fascinating and complex historical period when the foundations of modern society were emerging. The music is at times extravagant and virtuosic, at other times tuneful, intimate, or pious. We look forward to presenting this exciting repertory to our audience.”

La Fiocco performs instrumental and vocal music of the late Renaissance, Baroque and early Classical eras. A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, La Fiocco presents an annual series of three concerts each in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. La Fiocco also performs at other venues in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Boston, MA and Providence, RI.

Additional program information and ticket purchasing link to be announced.
