Danny Tobias and Friends, Featuring Larry McKenna
September 21 @ 2:00 pm
Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society welcome Danny Tobias, cornet and flugelhorn, Larry McKenna, tenor sax, Joe Plowman, bass and Silas Irvine on piano to the great acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary.
Veteran jazz musician Danny Tobias has put together some of the best and brightest jazz performers to come out of the Philadelphia area in many years! Danny Tobias and Friends will perform two sets of swinging jazz rooted in the tradition of great songs by Gershwin, Berlin, Rodgers, Kern, etc.
Equally at home with a cornet or trumpet, Trentonian Danny Tobias brings beautiful shape and individuality to his performances. Playing professionally since the age of 15, he’s best known for traditional jazz and swing, artfully reproducing classic arrangements or uniquely improvising, but his skills and repertoire embrace a variety of styles. In addition to playing with the Midiri Brothers’ Sextet across the USA, Danny has led bands and performed for the Pennsylvania Jazz Society, New Jersey Jazz Society and the Tri-State Jazz Society, and has also worked with a number of prolific artists such as Warren Vaché, Scott Robinson, Vince Giordano, Wycliffe Gordon, Harry Allen, Jon-Erik Kellso, Brooks Tegler and Howard Alden. Danny has performed at Birdland, the Lincoln Center Atrium, the Players Club, and other jazz-loving venues in New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore and surrounds.
Larry McKenna is known for his gorgeous, velvety tenor saxophone sound, the unparalleled beauty of his balladry, and his fluid, bebop-inspired improvisations. For years, Larry’s status as a jazz great has been affirmed by his myriad fans and the jazz stars with whom he has played and recorded including Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra.
Jazz at the 1867 Sanctuary and throughout the Trenton/Princeton area is featured on trenton.jazznearyou.com. Download their app for iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire!
