Erin Heisel, Soprano and Daniel Keene, Guitar, “Re-imaginings”

Preservation New Jersey welcomes Erin Heisel, Soprano and Daniel Keene, Guitar for their program, Re-imaginings.
Soprano Erin Heisel and guitarist Daniel Keene celebrate original ideas as well as new expressions of them in this varied program of nineteenth and twentieth-century “Re-imaginings.” Featuring the compelling music of Franz Schubert, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and others.
Soprano Erin Heisel’s (ErinHeisel.com) performances have been described as “brave, vivid” (The New York Times) and “clear, flute-like…beautiful” (Daily Hampshire Gazette, MA). In New York City, she has performed at the Cornelia Street Café with the Composer’s Collaborative series “Serial Underground,” on the “Friends and Enemies of New Music” series with composer David Del Tredici at the piano, at The Tank, The Galapagos Artspace, The Secret Theatre, The Stone, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, and at the Brooklyn Library and Brooklyn Museum in concerts sponsored by the Brooklyn Philharmonic. She has performed with the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MA), the Arcadia Players Baroque Orchestra, the Lisa Leizman Dance Company, the Downtown Sinfonietta in White Plains, NY, and with the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Other international performances include a recital at the Theatrum Kuks Baroque Festival in the Czech Republic, concerts at venues around South Africa, and a program of American song at the Official Residence of the American Ambassador in Bratislava, Slovakia. Erin is the voice of the vampire in Ronen Shai’s animated opera “Todd and the Vampire” and was part of the Public Art Fund’s installation of Tino Sehgal’s “This You” in New York City’s City Hall Park, which ran for three months in summer, 2016. She was part of the 2018 U.S. premiere of Rainer Ganahl’s Marx Punk Opera, which she also performed at the Montez Press Radio space NYC in early 2019. Also interested in physical theatre and movement improvisation, Erin has performed and written a variety of experimental theatre pieces. Her piece “Transformations,” with music by John Cage , premiered at The Tank in New York City and extended versions have been performed at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Her theatre piece “Let Us Spend One Day As Deliberately As Nature” premiered in a workshop in North Carolina and an extended, multimedia version of the piece entitled “One Deliberate Day” was produced as part of New York University’s experimental music summer program IMPACT in summer, 2015.
Erin studied voice with Janet Canada Fritsch, Steven Stolen, Jon Humphrey, Oren Brown, and Dr. Robert C. White, Jr. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in voice from Butler University, a Master’s in voice from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a PhD in Music Performance and Composition (Voice) from New York University with research in Johan Huizinga’s theory of play and the work of professional musicians. She has completed additional graduate work in interdisciplinary studies at Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University. Erin has taught voice and other music courses at The University of Massachusetts–Amherst, Bay Path College, New York University, and she currently teaches at Adelphi University. She has presented research in conferences in the U.S. and abroad and currently serves as the Vice President of Areas for the Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association.
New York native Daniel Keene (DanielKeene.net) is a guitarist, lutenist, arranger, composer, and chamber player. A dedicated teacher, he is currently on the faculty at SUNY Nassau Community College and Adelphi University, teaching courses pertaining to performance and composition.
A multi-instrumentalist, Daniel plays on an array of plucked string instruments, including the Renaissance lute, Renaissance bandora, Baroque guitar, nineteenth century guitar, modern guitar, and mandolin. He has concertized extensively in New York and along the East Coast as a soloist and chamber musician, performing at The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Opera America, Shapeshifter Lab, Christ Church of Oyster Bay, Spectrum NYC, The Custer Observatory, The Buttonwood Tree, and at a multitude of other venues. Daniel is a member of The Red Door Chamber Players and The Samadi-Keene Piano & Guitar Duo. In addition, he has performed with Long Island Baroque Ensemble, The Golden Williams Duo, The Bacheler Consort, Impetus Dance Collaborative, and Musical Amoeba. An avid performer of new music, Daniel has collaborated with composers all over the globe, premiering many new works on guitar.
Daniel began studying music at the age of nine. He studied both lute and guitar with William Zito and Jerry Willard, guitar with Stephen Leonard, and worked with tenor Jonathan Goodman, pianist Dr. Susan Sobolewski, and violinist Dr. Linda Sinanian on musical interpretation.
The 1867 Sanctuary Arts and Culture Center is wheelchair-accessible through a wheelchair ramp through the gate on the left side of the building. All parking is across the street in the Ewing Presbyterian Church lots, including an inner ring across the street for disabled parking. Passengers may be dropped off at the curb directly in front of the main entrance; please use your hazard flashers when stopped there. Concert parking is recommended in the north lot (by the field closest to I-295). For your safety, please cross at the marked crosswalk and press the yellow button to activate flashers.
