October Folk/Roots Festival!
with the Boxcar Lilies
and Gordon Thomas Ward
Sunday, October 9, 2016, 3:00 pm
at the 1867 Sanctuary at Ewing
Preservation New Jersey is pleased to present The Boxcar Lilies at the 1867 Sanctuary at Ewing as part of our special 3-concert October Folk/Roots Festival! Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
The Boxcar Lilies have made a name for themselves with their signature mix of folk, country, and bluegrass-tinged Americana music featuring spine-tingling, innovative harmonies and great songwriting. The Massachussets-based Boxcar Lilies are Jenny Goodspeed (electric bass, guitar) and Lambertville native Stephanie Marshall (washboard, guitar). Original band member Katie Clarke retired from the group in December of 2015, and now award-winning singer-songwriter Susan Cattaneo will lend her powerful voice to the band’s renowned three-part harmonies. Celebrated sideman Jim Henry (Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eliza Gilkyson) will accompany the Lilies on Dobro, mandolin, and guitar.
The Lilies have brought their uniquely warm sound and charming stage presence to venues up and down the Eastern seaboard. It’s a sound that's led to numerous opportunities including being selected for an official showcase at the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis and performing at the 2014 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival as the #1 Most Wanted Emerging Artist. Their 2015 release Knockout Rose debuted at #5 on the International Folk DJ album charts this past October.. For more about the Boxcar Lilies visit www.boxcarlilies.com.
Mutual friend, singer-songwriter, and WDVR-FM ("These Days") radio personality Gordon Thomas Ward opens the show with folk music and storytelling in the wonderful acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary at Ewing. Friends of the 1867 Sanctuary will remember Gordon for his moving and heartwarming performance on September 9. Audience members concur that his musical portraits of people, places, and events come alive and touch their hearts as if he’s performing just for them.
Gordon has worked with many notable musicians such as Eric Troyer (Electric Light Orchestra), Carolann Solebello (Red Molly), Nalani and Sarina, William Hall (Frostwater), David Rimelis, and Dave Shapiro, The Boxcar Lilies and the trio Huxtable, Christensen, and Hood.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Gordon in the beautiful setting of the 1867 Sanctuary. In the words of Tom Martin of Rutherfurd Hall, He has one of the best voices I've heard in a long time and the instrumentation to go with it! His ability as a raconteur and minstrel were both provocative and soothing. Bravo! He totally amazed me!
