Preservation New Jersey is pleased to present Eric Houghton and special guest, Andrea Lapinski and their program of Piano Classics and Shakespeare Songs in the excellent acoustics and warm Sunday afternoon light of the 1867 Sanctuary.
2016 marks the 400th year of the death of William Shakespeare. In four settings from his Sonnets 116 and 60, the Tempest, and Much Ado about Nothing, we hear familiar and eternal themes from "The Bard":
As a native of Long Beach Island, New Jersey, Eric was also attracted to these texts because each has a certain nautical reference. He hopes you enjoy them.
Sunday's program also features inspiring performances of popular piano masterpieces by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann, and Chopin, accessible to adults and students alike.
Pianist/Composer Eric Houghton was born and raised in the New Jersey shore community of Harvey Cedars. He started piano lessons at age 13 and soon began entering and winning many local competitions. Upon completing two advanced degrees in Piano Performance in 1987, Houghton began teaching and performing at Westminster Conservatory of Music in Princeton, New Jersey. He has performed over 30 solo and chamber recitals throughout the Eastern United States, programming both classical repertoire and his own works. As composer, Houghton has written over 50 songs over the past 20 years, including his massive Pioneer Songs/ Victory Songs and Songs From the Cross. He has composed songs cycles on the words of Victor Hugo and Psalms, and composed dozens of solo piano works and church anthems. In 2012 he composed and performed a Musical Program of Recovery, performed at the Ewing Presbyterian Church, also at Westminster Conservatory in Princeton, and throughout New Jersey.
Andrea Lapinski is a classically-trained vocalist and performs at various concerts and special events. She started singing at the age of 16 as a church cantor and since then has studied with coaches from Juilliard, Mannes and Westminster. Over the years, Andrea appeared as a guest vocalist at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan, played the role of Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, and performed original pieces by Eric Houghton. For the past three years, she has participated as soloist for a touring musical program, The Wit and Wisdom of Broadway with Fr. Frank McNulty. Andrea serves as a cantor soloist at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, NJ and is currently working on her Master's in Classical Performance at Queens College.
