Philadelphia Saxophone Quartet
Preservation New Jersey is pleased to present The Philadelphia Saxophone Quartet and their program, Flowers for Mom on Mother's Day weekend.

The first half of the concert will include “Tango” from “Espana Suite” by Albeniz, excerpts from the Pierre Max DuBois Saxophone Quartet, parts of Bach’s Toccata In D Minor, selections from Tchaikowski’s “Seasons”, and an exciting piece by Milan Kaderavek. The second half will feature some fun and unusual arrangements, including Fourth Jazz Vignette by Lennie Niehaus, Ulla In Africa by Heiner Wiberny, the tango “Orlando Gogni”, and some songs for mom from the Great American Songbook.

The Philadelphia Saxophone Quartet was formed in 1967 (when the 1867 Sanctuary was only 100 years old!) and has continued with an active schedule throughout the years. The quartet currently includes Kathy Mitchell on soprano, John Bachalis on alto, Warren Fioretti on tenor, and Drew Wierzbowski on baritone. The quartet's original members were Harold Karabell on soprano saxophone, Bill Holcombe on alto, Norman Wells on tenor, and Jerry Nowak on baritone.

The quartet has had an active schedule over the years, performing with many symphonies throughout the northeastern U.S., including the Trenton, Portland, New London, Hartford, Springfield, Rhode Island, Buffalo and Kenneth Square Symphonies. They also have frequently performed at public school and college recitals, community concerts, recording sessions and clinic presentations.

The quartet’s repertoire includes both classic and jazz music incorporating many different styles and pieces from various historical periods. The overall characteristic of the performing style of the quartet is pure expressive phrasing and attention to detail in the style and inflection of the music being performed.
