Arts and Culture Center
Preservation New Jersey is pleased to welcome solo acoustic master guitarists Vin Downes and Aaron Lefebvre in concert in the beautiful setting and acoustics of the historic landmark 1867 Sanctuary Arts and Culture Center!
Vin Downes (www.vindownes.com) began studying guitar at the age of eleven. His early interests were in electric guitar, but this all changed when he heard the opening notes of David Cullen’s “Along the Way” on a Windham Hill Records guitar sampler. He immediately immersed himself in the fingerstyle music of Will Ackerman, Michael Hedges, David Cullen and Leo Kottke.
Greatly influenced by the music of artists on Windham Hill Records in the late 1980's, Downes furthered his interest of fingerstyle technique and composition by earning a degree in classical guitar performance and music education from William Paterson University. While at WPU, he studied classical composition and had several of his compositions performed by soloists and ensembles, including the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, Helix Ensemble and members of the Composer’s Guild of New Jersey.
Vin Downes has released four studio albums, two of which were produced by Grammy Award winning guitarist and producer, Will Ackerman. He is currently a performing member of The Gathering – A Concert Series presented by Will Ackerman.
He has recorded and performed with musicians including Will Ackerman, Tom Eaton, Michael Manring, Eugene Friesen, Liz Story and Tony Levin.
Vin Downes is a public school music teacher in New Jersey, where he currently teaches classical guitar at Bayonne High School.
Vin Downes is a Riverwide Records (www.riverwiderecords.com) recording artist. Vin Downes is a Stonebridge Guitars Artist
The Gathering Concert ~ Vin Downes plays "Unlike the Stars".
A modern musician with a heart full of folk music, Aaron Lefebvre (www.aaaronlefebvre.com) is an acoustic finger-style guitarist from Pittsburgh, PA. He grew up in the rural hills of Central and Southwestern Pennsylvania in a household where folk, blues, rock, and jazz were a constant presence in the air. Blooming from his self-taught approach to acoustic guitar, his music combines traditional and folk guitar musings with modern finger-style techniques that follow a musical narrative to inspire the imagination.
Aaron has shared stages with guitarists such as Antoine Dufour, Craig D'Andrea, Peter Janson, Steve Davison, Ian Ethan Case, Daniel Bachman, Ryan Ayers, singer-songwriters Jess Klein, Carrie Elkin, Edward David Anderson, and bluegrass group, Della Mae. He has also presented a guitar workshop at the University of Massachusetts Boston campus entitled, “The Art of Not Knowing,” an exploration of musical imagination and creative process. You can see him in a multitude of settings including coffee shops, art galleries, weddings, house concerts, stage venues, and even his front porch on nice days.
Aaron's first full-length album, Ghost Town Windows, is available on Amazon.com, iTunes, Spotify, and his Bandcamp page. You can also find his music on YouTube, ReverbNation, and SoundCloud.
"Catalpa" by Aaron Lefebvre - "When I was a kid, we had an enormous catalpa tree in the front yard which held aloft a tire swing. I'd sit in it endlessly and just let the win sway me to and fro as I watched our hayfield shift in the breeze."
