Folk/Roots Music Series:
Singer-Songwriters Night with
and Bill Buttner
Friday, September 1, 2017, 8:00 pm
at the 1867 Sanctuary Arts and Culture Center
Preservation New Jersey is pleased to present Singer-Songwriters Night with Mike Herz and Bill Buttner in their first appearance in the wonderful acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary Arts and Culture Center.
With an uncanny ability to turn a phrase and pen lyrics with rich resonance, Mike Herz writes and performs in a style that is all his own. An aspiring poet long before picking up a guitar, Herz quickly came to the realization that his words stood a better chance of entering more ears if put to a tune. Flash forward years and many miles later and Mike feels most comfortable on stage in front of complete strangers. Music has brought him across this great nation and into spellbound evenings in some of the best listening rooms around. His debut album Overgrown was released in 2013, duo album (with Emily Barnes) Closer to Home in 2015 and his follow up solo album, The Acrobat was released in January 2017. Named as Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2016, Mike was recently selected to be a finalist in the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival Songwriter Showcase in Lyons, CO in August 2017.
breathes new life into folk music.
Overgrown is a triumph of the lyric-driven, acoustic-based, and highly personal music form. At one time it would have been labeled Folk Music, music by and about regular folks like us. But perhaps we should call it Life Music. Mike Herz is singing about his life, and about our lives.
Mike writes songs with layers of depth.
Mike, your performance yesterday was remarkable. This was the first time I have seen and heard you play but it will not be the last. You have an amazing gift and you are a great inspiration.

Bill Buttner, an acclaimed singer-songwriter from Ulster County, New York, will open for Mike Herz in this concert. Says Bill, I'm proud to be a songwriter and follow in the great tradition of my songwriting heroes Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. By day I'm an Ultrasound technologist and by nights and weekends I traverse the tri-state area playing my original acoustic songs to any and all who will listen.
Bill Buttner performs his song You Don't Know Nothin' About Me.
